For a better night’s sleep silk may be the answer. With not only the added health benefits a full night’s rest will provide silk lies gently onto one’s body providing benefits including better hair, skin, reduction in acne and better joints. Whilst having similar cooling qualities to cotton, silk puts less pressure on problematic joints which eliminates painful pressure points, meaning a person has a more comfortable night’s rest. How?

In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine, the efficacy of silk pillowcases in the treatment of acne vulgaris was investigated.

The study noted found that the slick texture of silk may be better for a person’s skin, especially for those battling with acne.

The clinical trial showed a reduction in pimples for people who slept on ‘silk-like’ pillowcases when compared to those who slept on cotton covers. 

Board-certified dermatologist and medical director of MDacne said: “These pillowcases can be a beneficial addition to other acne treatments.

“Silk pillowcases are gentler on the skin of people with acne or sensitive skin than rough cotton pillowcases.

“The friction from cotton on pimple-prone skin can create more inflammation, making acne worse.

“Cotton also sops up the natural oil and bacteria from your face and hair, and that grime accumulates on your case night after night, creating a petri dish out of your pillow.

“Silk pillowcases absorb less of the moisture and dirt and thus may be a better choice for people with acne and this is especially true for people who sleep on their sides or stomach.”

The benefits of sleeping with a silk pillowcase include:

  • Less friction on skin or hair prevents irritation or damage
  • A cleaner sleep surfaces
  • Less drying for skin and hair

Cools body temperature

Silk may not be the most cooling bedding option, but it certainly does regulate temperature.

According to Lexie Sachs, Associate Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, silk fibres are inherently temperature-regulating.

Unlike cotton, which absorbs moisture, silk wicks moisture away to keep you dry and cool all night long.

Silk provides a breathable, yet insulating barrier between yourself and the surrounding temperature, which can keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
