Acne on the face occurs when the oily substance and dead skin cells plug hair follicles.

This then triggers inflammation and infection, resulting in more acne.

Your thyroid could be the cause of your adult acne, and you can check this by a simple at-home test.

What is the thyroid and why does it influence adult acne?

The thyroid is a gland that is located at the back of a person’s neck.

The key role of the thyroid is for secreting hormones that control a person’s metabolism – a key element in the management of how the body uses energy.

Another key element is its role in skin function potentially being the cause of your skin acne.

Dr Alexandra Mikhael, an endocrinologist said: “Acne vulgaris is the medical term for chronic inflammation of the hair follicles in your skin.

“Dead skin cells, oil and bacteria block the follicles.”

When swallowing take a look at your neck and check for any bulges or protrusions
