Justin Theroux Talks Friendship With Ex Jen Aniston

They were the couple everyone shipped, a pairing of two intellectual, savvy, stylish and compassionate beings who found love later in life: Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston. Since her very public divorce from Brad Pitt, Jen’s love life has become public interest. While celebrities have always found their love lives victim to public intrigue, Jen’s hit different. In her breakup we saw ourselves, we felt her pain, and her heartbreak resonated with people around the world. Since then, we’ve acted as the protective sibling to the Golden Girl, and where it’s been brought to our attention that she’s taken on a suitor, we’ve been quick to voice or support or lack thereof.

Theroux served as a partner we avidly supported and so, when this marriage ended, again we found ourselves reeling and swearing off romance altogether. But in a recent interview with Esquire, Theroux has once again given us all the feels as he talked about his relationship with Jen and how the pair have maintained a strong friendship.

“I would say we’ve remained friends,” Theroux told the publication. “We don’t talk every day, but we call each other. We FaceTime. We text.”

Asked how Theroux and Aniston navigate the complex emotional terrain that comes from two people who have seen their marriage end, he explains: “Like it or not, we didn’t have that dramatic split, and we love each other.”

He added, “I’m sincere when I say that I cherish our friendship. We can not be together and still bring each other joy and friendship. Also, she makes me laugh very, very hard. She’s a hilarious person. It would be a loss if we weren’t in contact, for me personally. And I’d like to think the same for her.”

The union between the pair was one that immediately made sense. Both share a large group of friends, including the likes of Jimmy and Molly Kimmel, Jason Bateman and his wife, as well as Will Arnett. But as Theroux was quick to point out, when the marriage ended no one had to choose sides. Speaking to Esquire about the couple, Will Arnett said: “In a lot of ways, it’s kind of seamless. It speaks volumes about both of them. When you’ve been with somebody in that way, you’ll always be connected. And it’s hats off to them for how much attention they give that, and how important it is to both of them to maintain that love. I think it’s really remarkable.”

Theroux also added, “I think that when you get good at relationships – and here I am, single – if you love the person the same way you loved them in the relationship, it would behoove you to love them the same way out of the relationship.”

As for dating and relationships, Theroux admits he’s not dating and is happily single. He told the publication, “You meet different kinds of women in your life, who teach you different lessons about what gives you the best chances of success with being satisfied in a relationship.”

For Theroux, one thing is clear: “The only relationship where I think codependency should be totally encouraged is with a dog.”
