The EastEnders actor who plays Mick Carter’s daughter Frankie in the BBC soap has made it into week four of the BBC dancing competition with professional partner Giovanni Pernice. The star has been deaf since she was a child and in order to communicate uses a mixture of oral English and British Sign Language (BSL) as well as wearing hearing aids. Yet only two days before the live Strictly show Rose was left struggling more than usual.
Posting on partner Giovanni’s Instagram the pair announced “some news”, they revealed that Rose’s hearing aid had completely broken meaning she could not hear “anything at all”.
The Italian professional dancer added: “So NHS please be quick! We need it!”
Although hearing aids cannot cure Rose’ condition, they can make sounds louder and clearer and reduce the impact hearing loss has on her life.
The NHS explains that hearing aids can do the following:
- Help you hear everyday sounds such as the doorbell and phone
- Improve your ability to hear speech
- Make you feel more confident when talking to people and make it easier for you to follow Conversations in different environments
- Help you to enjoy listening to music and the TV, at a volume that’s comfortable for those around you.
Rose added: “However not all deaf people are the same, every deaf person will have their own unique experience with music.
“I do love music and I can’t wait to be taught how to dance at a professional level for Strictly!”
The most common type of hearing aid are behind the ear (BTE) hearing aids. They are made up of a small plastic device – which as the name suggests sits behind the ear and a plastic tube fits in your ear.
Similarly individuals can also get receiver in the ear (RITE) hearing aids. The main difference is that with RITE hearing aids, the part of the hearing aid that sits behind the ear is smaller and is connected by a thin wire to a speaker placed inside the opening of the ear.
These hearing aids are less visible and are suitable for most people with hearing loss.
People can either experience partial, total, sudden, gradual, permanent or temporary hearing loss.
Age-related hearing loss affects one in three people by the age of 65 which can be extremely isolating and frustrating for those who suffer from it. U
sually people are able to communicate through lip reading – which Rose is seen doing in the video with Giovanni. However due to the Covid pandemic this aid has been removed due to the wearing of face masks.

Speaking during deaf awareness week earlier this year, Rose explained: “Probably the hardest challenge for me is the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Everyone’s wearing masks, everyone is socially distanced, whereas before, when people wouldn’t wear masks they would come up close to me so I can see their face and lip read.
“But now, everyone is wearing masks and standing well away so I can’t understand everyone. It’s quite hard.
“But luckily everyone here [EastEnders production crew] is very nice, and they’ve adapted to what I needed.”
