Bindi Irwin Gets Real About Expectation & Reality When It Comes to Motherhood

It’s no secret that Bindi Irwin, her hubby Chandler Powell and their daughter Grace Warrior are the epitome of a perfect family. As much as we absolutely adore our favorite mommy-daddy-daughter trio, who live and work at the Australia Zoo, Irwin recently opened up about the picture-perfect expectations she had while pregnant with Grace — and how her reality of motherhood looks now, thirteen months later.

In People magazine’s May 23 cover story, Irwin got super honest about all the ways she eagerly planned to raise Grace before giving birth. “I had this whole plan,” Irwin said. “Like, ‘This is what I’m going to do with food, and this is what we’re going to do with sleep routines.’ Then she was born, and everything was thrown out the window.”

Come on, we’ve all been there — those starry-eyed moments during pregnancy, when we’re feeling ambitious enough to make all the baby food from scratch and keep our newborns on a meticulous sleep schedule. Fast forward a year later, and Irwin has shifted her perspective when it comes to parenting her daughter with Powell. “Now I’m like, ‘If I can get her to eat vegetables at all, I’m winning,’” she says.

Irwin has an important message for other moms and dads that she’s learned in the first year of parenting, too — and it’s a great way for new and seasoned parents who struggle with hard-to-meet expectations of raising their child. “I think every parent should know it’s okay if you don’t do things exactly by the book,” Irwin suggests. “You have to find your own rhythm.”
