Pollen count: Doing this with your nose twice a day can keep hay fever symptoms at bay

The Met Office has forecast the pollen count for the whole of the UK today. Today the pollen count varies around the country with the South of England including Wales seeing a high pollen count, meaning that people who suffer from hay fever may see worse symptoms. The Midlands including some parts of Scotland will see a medium level of pollen while the Highlands will see a low level of pollen.

Pollen count is based on the measurement of the number of pollen grains in a cubic metre of the air at any one time.

When the count is higher, like it is forecasted to be today those who suffer with hay fever will likely experience worse symptoms.

Pollen count is split into three types; trees, grass and weed. It is possible that you can have an allergy to all three but an allergy to grass pollen is the most common.

As grass pollen season approaches, experts are advising those who suffer to prepare with different medications, remedies and hacks.

Experts at SimplyMeds have revealed how to best keep your hay fever symptoms at bay.

They have advised those suffering to do this daily to try and alleviate your allergy symptoms.

They said: “Try clearing your nasal passage with a salt water solution once to twice a day, this should help to clear any irritants from your nose that have been able to attach themselves to nose hairs.”

Pollen can easily stick to hair and items like clothes so in order to keep hay fever symptoms at bay, it is advised that you try and clear any stuck pollen particles away.

The NHS recommends regularly cleaning your nasal passages which will not only keep it free from pollen, but also other irritants too.

You can buy rinses from the pharmacy designed to help hay fever symptoms or you can make your own by simply mixing salt with water.

However it is important to note that if you use tap water, it must be boiled first to sterilise it, and then left to cool down until it has reached a lukewarm temperature.

Likewise, you can also use distilled water that has already been sterilised.

To rinse your nose:

• Stand over a sink, cup the palm of one hand and pour a small amount of the solution into it
• Sniff the water into one nostril at a time
• Repeat this until your nose feels comfortable (you may not need to use all of the solution)

While you do this, some solution may pass into your throat through the back of your nose.

The NHS says that the solution is harmless if swallowed, but try to spit out as much as much of it as possible as it won’t taste the best.

This should be carried out regularly, around one or two times a day, making sure a fresh solution is being made each time.

You can also try putting a balm like Vaseline around the nose to trap pollen, it can also work under the eyes to prevent them getting runny and itchy too.

This might be a bit uncomfortable to begin with, but many hay fever sufferers have said that the hack actually works.

Trying this hack may help alleviate symptoms like sneezing because the pollen will get trapped.

You can try this tip when the pollen count is high or you feel your symptoms are getting worse. Always remember to take antihistamines as well as eye drops and nasal sprays if you need to which can be purchased at the pharmacy.
