- Lizzo just opened up about going on a detox smoothie cleanse, and some fans were not impressed.
- She says she decided to do the cleanse to “reset her stomach” after suffering from gastrointestinal issues.
- Fans called her out for promoting diet culture. Lizzo clapped back about the double standard: “As a big girl, people just expect that if you are doing something for health, you’re doing it for weight loss. But that is not the case.”
Lizzo is pretty open about her day-to-day life (like her vegan diet) on social media. So it’s hardly shocking when she talks about what she’s eating and doing on the reg. The singer just opened up about going on a smoothie cleanse, and some people were not impressed.
First, Lizzo shared in an Instagram post that she did nutritionist J.J. Smith’s 10-day smoothie detox. The video showed a list of Lizzo’s smoothies and capsules that she planned to add to them, with her scratching off a 10 on the list. Lizzo then stood in front of the camera in a sports bra and leggings, before slowly turning. Cut to shots of her doing the same on different days of the cleanse.
In another post, which she captioned “part two,” Lizzo again poses in front of the camera in a series of cute athleisure outfits.
Cut on over to her Instagram Stories and there’s a lot more of the same. Lizzo kicked things off with a video of herself making a smoothie. The words, “What I Eat in a Day on JJ Smith’s 10 Day Smoothie Detox” are written over top, with this disclaimer: “I was practicing safe detox methods [with] a nutritionist. Do not try without research.”
Then, Lizzo showed herself drinking a green smoothie, taking a supplement, making “beauty water,” and drinking a liter of water. Next up, she drank a “superfood shake,” a bunch of other liquids, and more green juice. Lizzo also shared some shots of herself having snacks, like apples and peanut butter, a protein bar, and cucumber slices in apple cider vinegar.
At one point, she showed a video of her feet in the tub, writing “soaked in herbs,” and used “foot detox pads.”
“So I drank a lot and I ate a lot of foods and f*cked my stomach up in Mexico,” she said in one video. So, she decided to do the cleanse. “You drink these green smoothies every day,” she says, noting that days four, five, and six were the “hardest.” Lizzo also said she wanted to “stress eat and do things that were self-harming.”
“I feel amazing and I think it’s great to reset your stomach, especially when you deal with gastrointestinal issues like I do,” she says. “But I think I look f*cking great, too.”
But fans weren’t exactly on board. “Are you doing alright?” one person wrote in the comments. “Diet culture comes for all of us,” another wrote. “No no no Lizzo nooo😭,” someone else chimed in.
FWIW, plenty of people came to Lizzo’s defense online, including feminist writer Roxanne Gay, who had this to say on Twitter:
