You’re probably wiping your bottom wrong, at least according to Sameer Islam, MD, a.k.a. the “poop guru” of YouTube. In a highly requested video, Dr. Islam shares the proper way to wipe and care for your butt after pooping for your healthiest bottom yet.
“Your bottom is a very sensitive area,” Dr. Islam says in the video. “It doesn’t like a lot of roughhousing, pressure, or scraping.” He provides five major tips for cleaning your bottom.
Tip number one: “My recommendation is to blot the area,” says Dr. Islam. Rather than using a rough wiping motion, blot it, as if you were removing excess sweat from your forehead.
Number two: Dr. Islam recommends to “consider adding water,” whether that’s adding water to the toilet paper or using a bidet for a gentler cleansing than plain toilet paper.
Third, which should be a no-brainer, but wipe from front to back. “If you wipe back to front, there’s a chance you can get bacteria is places you don’t want it,” adds Dr. Islam.
The doctor’s fourth tip is be gentle. You may think the more heavy-handed you are, the better, but Dr. Islam says, “You can cause a tear, hemorrhoids, or pain down below as well.”
Lastly, toss out your wet wipes. “Wet wipes will help strip away some of the natural bacteria and moisture inside of your bottom,” adds Dr. Islam. “Which can make it more likely for you to have other things like a fungal infection going on in there.”
Here’s to a cleaner, healthier butt—now and forever.
