Earlier this month, Gwyneth Paltrow shared that she was still feeling the lasting symptoms of her early infection with COVID-19 in 2020.
In an episode of Dear Media’s “The Art of Being Well” podcast with functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole, Paltrow, who is already pretty loudly conscious of diet and nutrition, spoke about how her experience of getting COVID-19 totally changed her approach to her diet.
In conversation with Cole, Paltrow said that she’d originally gained a lot of weight since recovering from COVID-19, noting that her usual approach to nutrition kind of went out the window and she was just “having alcohol and pasta all the time.” She said that while she’d typically be able to quickly “eat really well for a couple days and exercise” if she gained weight and see her body go back to her comfort zone, that post-COVID she was retaining weight differently.
“I was having some health issues and we had done a series of labs of year before, and then COVID happened and I didn’t do my eating plan and, you know, I just was like having alcohol and pasta all the time and then I sort of hit a wall,” Paltrow said. ‘So I reached back out to [Dr. Cole] and I was like, ‘okay, it’s really time, time to try this and try.’ And, because I have a lot of inflammation, it was time to really start healing the gut.”
She notes that her New York-based doctor said that he saw other patients experience similar metabolism issues (something there’s some research on) to the ones Paltrow was describing — “I think maybe some of it is because I got COVID. My physician in New York was saying that that was affecting a lot of his patients metabolisms as well” — but she also added that she gets that she’s 48-years-old and metabolisms can change as you age.
Paltrow did, however, share that Cole put her on a paleo-inspired “bone broth cleanse” — which was part of the “process of letting [her] digestive system rest and for the lining to start to heal a little bit over those first six days.”
“I felt like I never could have found or started to listen to that intuitive voice about what I wanted to eat or not eat,” Paltrow adds. “Had I not kind of done something a bit drastic to kind of do that reset, because I think so much of coping with busy-ness and everything is food and it’s mindless eating and everything. And then when you’re not digesting well, it’s affecting all kinds of things.”
Paltrow had previously described her (unsurprisingly Goop-y) detox tips post-COVID in a blog post a few weeks back, giving a glimpse into her wellness strategies “everything I’m doing feels good, like a gift to my body. I have energy, I’m working out in the mornings, and I’m doing an infrared sauna as often as I can, all in service of healing. A side benefit is my skin, which makes me happy—and makes me want to double down on skin care even more.”
